I am working on completing a set of Lincoln pennies only from "wild caught" sources. My question is, have any of you had any luck finding post 74 S mint "in the wild"? I realize the circumstances to find one would be rare at best, but I am just hoping that someone out there might give me a ray of hope it might happen one day :-) Thanks for your time

Depending on what part of the country you are on, Its relatively easy to pull. I'm on the west coast and come across S mints quite often...By memorial Print Run, the 68s would be the hardest Memorial to Catch in the wild(a Guy made a very great post about the "key" and Semi Key dates for the Memorial Series)

i roll search boxes from the bank. I've done 29 boxes and have at least 100 of each of the s mints from 1968 to 1974. every box gave me at least one of each date. but I'm over here in san diego so pulls might be different in the east.

I am actually doing fine on the Pre-75 years, it is just the 75 and more recent I don't have high hopes for as I understand S mints weren't made for general circulation. Am I wrong?

well cents from 1974 and earlier that have an s on them were made for general circulation. 1975 and on cents that have s mint are proofs only and it will be really rare to find any in circulation. so are you collecting proofs and business strikes, or what? because if you are only collecting coins that were issued for circulation then you dont have to worry about any s mint coins from 1975 to present!

for example, I have done 29 boxes of cents. I have found 624 s mint cents from 1968 to 1974. and I have found exactly 0 from 1975 to present.

I live on the east coast, and I've never seen a post '74 Lincoln in change.

Well, it would be really fun to get them all in the wild including the proof S's I am doing this more for the fun than anything else. To be straight honest I started CRH just to pick out copper cents to hold back, but I got a really nice run of some super nice 60's cents in rolls and thought "why not start collecting the nice ones as well" and now I am hooked. Getting that 1906 Indian Head in a roll is what really sealed the deal for me that there was more to this than just picking out copper.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Dansco-7100-Coi...em45fb4acf8athis is the album I have. it does not include proofs so you could have a fun time filling the whole thing out pretty easily from 1959 to present. only one that might be a bit of a challenge is the 1970 s small date.

I have the rather "exhaustive" Whitman book. It even has spots for the double dies....good luck with those in the wild :-)

i have several 74 and older "s" mm cents. mostly from previously hoarded coins, form my own jars originally hoarded in the 70's and 80's.

I pulled an 82 S from circulation a couple of years back. I have found 4 proof nickels in circulation. So,don't give up hope! If this economy falters again I would not be surprised to find anything in circulation again.

YES! I found a 1982-S here in Canada about 2 years ago!
(not my most valuable roll-search find by any means, but definitely my wierdest!)

What is easier is to work on the #2 and #3 whitman penny folders, easier to fill, cheaper too. Or, you can buy about nine of them partially filled for about $30 on ebay right now, for the next 2 hours or so anyways. Listing 260814543612.
