Me too. My first love is 2nd Reich but I couldn't leave the earlier thalers alone. Also like all the rest especially the circulation types. Weimar and Bundes.Rep. commem's don't interest me too much. Started with my father's WWII souvenirs. This led to German paper currency and the military medals of the German states. Haven't been very active in years with the coins.

Actually 'jderm', both are! The brassy one is the 10 matching to the 2 on the other side, both issued by Lingner Werke (Dresden). I have been putting together an interesting collection of the pre-1871 German States. I only have a couple of thalers. The rest are small denomination issues, but there are some harder to find places among them.

I do on occasion buy higher end pieces, but have slowed way down on that due to the massive amount of fakes that are showing up online, and have even begun to filter down to the local coin dealers who don't know world stuff well enough to spot the deceptions. mysilveryears, very nice pieces! The Frankfurt piece is especially so!
medieval, I think a Notgeld and money of necessity thread would be a great idea!

Excellent coins 'mysilveryears', btw the building on the second Frankfurt coin is called the "Roemer" and is still used today as the city hall.

Thanks for the appreciative comments.
This thread brings to mind a question I have had for some time that remains unanswered: Do collectors of common minor coins from populous countries such as Germany, France et. al. have albums available to put them in, like we have Dansco and Whitman in the USA?
And if so, where might one view and shop for these albums?
I have thought of making my own, and have the knowledge + skills to do so, but it's a very time consuming, tedious process. I have often wished Whitman and Dansco would expand beyond their limited world offerings. I bet doing so would spurt an interest in 'darkside' collecting far beyond where it is today.

Leuchtturm here in DE makes such albums, mostly for euro coins. But American collectors of German coins seem to be primarily interested in pieces that are not from this country (Federal Republic of Germany), and whether they are available for such old coins, I do not actually know. Then again I do not use or like those "put-that-coin-into-this-hole" albums myself. ;) Others may prefer them of course ...

Question about a reference book.
I am considering adding a Wildman Taler to my collection. Have the KM books but ever remembering to buy the book before the coin, am curious about DAV reference numbers. What Davison book is commonly referenced in this regard ie. Dav-6528, KM-57.1? Is it Large Size Silver Coins of the World: 16th-19th Centuries?

Initially I just got a couple of miscellaneous albums and used the variable hole sizes to accomodate the various sizes of the coins I had. The problem was that I ended up running out of the more common sizes and had holes that were too big, or coins that were too small. Everything that I get now is put in 2x2 Safe-T flips.

I collect mostly German coins (I'm starting to branch out). Here's a custom set I created on the NGC website over a year ago. I am only a couple coins short on my Bundesrepublik Silver Eagle 5 Mark set and 5/10 Mark Commemorative set. I have about 1700 unique (different, date, type, or MM) German coins from after 1871. The number is still rising quickly, but I seem to be focusing on quality over quantity these days. I only buy cheap stuff to fill holes when I don't want to spend money. |
