This coin could be a VF but there is some damage (?) on the king's nose.

this brings up a question, how does one augment the grading when 'damage' is present. I recently purchased a coin that had XF details but there were some scratches. I didn't mind the scratches but I would have no idea how to grade it - not that I NEED to, but I like to try.

Weavus:

I grade the coin for the details first, giving me a numerical grade. Then I look at the "issues" a coin might have such as bag marks, nicks, scratches etc. These are not in the initial detail grade but will bring the value of the coin down from the detail value. Those individuals who collect Early American Coppers will actually revise the original detail grade to reflect the "issues" and come to a net grade. Then there is the overall appeal of the coin, is it lousy, average or choice for the issue.

Deductions just like the original grade are subjective.

Hope this helps.

I think you're bound to have some marks on a VF coin. At least there are no big rim hits.
Perhaps I'd downgrade a little from VF30 to VF20?
