Here is a lovely coin that my Father-in-Law graded as UNC. It has full lustre and great detail on both sides - I wanted to see what you guys thought, if you can tell from this 200 DPI scan. If it's too hard to tell, I'll try to rescan at higher DPI, hope I can keep the image size under the cap.

Then again, maybe I'm just showing off this marvelous coin! javascript:insertsmilie('')

From what I can see from the images, I would grade it at AU-55.

echizento, may I ask what details have you leaning to this grading? I'm not questioning the grade, I'm trying to learn why this would not be a MS state of some type.

I couldn't grade this as an AU. The reverse has one large scratch and many other dings. Could be from bag marks, it is a heavy coin. Liberty on the obverse looks like she had her face smashed in. Maybe just a bad photo.

If its AU it's a lousy looking AU!!

I'd blame the pictures on this one; I'd like to see better before saying AU, not AU or better.

The dies on these Piastres were such that often lady liberty's face did not come out super well around the nose, chin, lips, cheek. The fasces looks crisp and bold, and the fields look terrific. I can't rule out an UNC here pending better pics, preferably with a camera: scanner images always look flat and give coins a dipped appearance.

With these coins, poor old lady Liberty often has a flattened nose, even in high grades. Not sure if that is due to wear or a high point in the design, or if it is not struck up well in this area.

Human creatures that we are, we tend to look at faces first. Probably instinct, but this part of the coin tends to be noticed.

This coin is better than most.
