Just curious... the painted quarters that were released into regular circulation, when you come across them now days, how are they (the paint) holding up? Any flaking or noticeable wear on the coloured surfaces?

This is a good question.
It seems to me that finding any coloured quarters these days is very hard, the remembrance poppy turns up every once in a while but try finding any of the Vancouver olympics, I havent seen one in months.
On the poppy quarters any I have found still have the red colour but it seems to fade over time.

The colour does come given time in circulation.
The only good examples I have are in my mint sets.

Which leads to another related question... will the red colour fade with time, even in your mint set? I guess the answer depends on the level of UV exposure and/or the quality of the pigment in their paints? Only time will tell I guess.

Sadly, the coloured coins that I find in circulation are always more faded than the "uncirculated" coins that I have in my mint set ... yah, it is only a matter of time before the color fades away ... hey, but on the bright-side, that 2004 "test-token" set will always go up in value => apparently, it's worth $50 today (hmmm, onlt 9,543 minted) => bring-it!

I wish this trend would go the way of the dodo.....not that I am into animal extinction but these quarters are abominations in my opinion.

Yah, I'm not a huge fan of the Canadian painted quarters either ... I was very happy that the Canadian Mint swapped the annual painted coins for non-painted coins in 2011 (example => the baby coin, the party coin, the wedding coin, etc, are no longer color painted coins in 2011) ... the painted coins were a bit like really bad Grade 5 art-class designs (geeky Santas, teddy bears, etc) => zero "class"

The "Bird Series" are the only painted quarters that are "okay" and even those are pretty tacky

I have some circulated painted quarters kicking around and these are definitely showing some wear.
