The collection and study of coins is "numismatics." The collection and study of paper money is _______ ? Also, is there a recommended website that gives the basics of paper money collecting: like what is the purpose of the serial number, what does the letter after the series date mean, what do different colored seals mean, how is paper money collected (by type, by signatures on the note, by serial number, or just what)? Thanks.
Rest in Peace

Hi Bill--

The collection and study of paper money is also numismatics as is tokens, medals and other exonumia. I'm not aware of a separate term for those who specialize in paper money, but I'm sure someone somewhere has coined (sri ) a term.

ScoutJim is knowledgeable on paper money, will probably check in here after finishing his turkey dinner, can answer your questions better than I.

Syngraphics
Word coined in 1974 to denote the study and collecting of paper money. Based on the Latin word syngrapha, meaning a written promise to pay

Direct from wikpedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Numism...ogy#Currency
but there is another name. the name for transportation token collectors is called a Vecturist and tokens are called token collectors or exonumia collectors as Morgan Fred has said
