Ohio Quarter Error?

Welcome bigrig40, You may have gotten a hold of a proof coin as SFDukie stated. An "S" mint mark would indicate a proof coin. The fact they you describe it as "really shiny" is another clue. Is the portrait of Washington more dull than the backround? If so this would also indicate a possible proof. Hope to see you on the boards! Here is another option. Plated. Many of the TV coin shows will plate quarter with silver, platinum, and gold. They also end up in circulation. As a 2002-D it is impossible to be silver.

Perhaps all of the Ohio State Quarters should be errors since Ohio is not a state (nor commonwealth, nor territory, nor anything else along those lines). Ohio applied for statehood in 1803, but the process was never completed. The necessary documents to make Ohio a state were never signed. This was not known until Ohio officials wished to display copies of the statehood documents on the 150th anniversary, which prompted the discovery. Congress then voted to make Ohio a state (which they can do), but then they voted to make the statehood status effective retroactive to 1803 (which they are not allowed to do), which made their voting null and void. Nothing has been done about the matter since, leaving Ohio in political limbo and continuing to pretend it is a state.
