This just arrived in the post today! What do you think?

(I still can't seem to get the first post about this coin deleted.)

Very nice, one of the best that I've seen from this period.

Did you purchase it in the USA or UK (or elsewhere)?

My son has been fortunate enough to build a comlete type set of English / British shillings with all of the major types from Charles 11 to Elizabeth 11. (no Northumberland or Dorien & Magens types), plus almost a complete type set of all shillings issued by Commonwealth countries. That's a lot of coins.

He is not able to persue this project much further.......he got married.....needs money for other things.

Regarding the "Dorien and Magens" shilling, this was declared illegal and melted down (although a few escaped!).

As is is therefore not a "proper coin", it can be deleted from the list.

Hey sel_691, that's pretty cool about your son's collection, that's sort of what I am trying to do. By the way, I was wondering if I could see a picture of your George II halfcrown coin you recently obtained?

EMC: Here are the coins that you may be ibterested in:

1723-George-I-

1723-George-I-

As you can see, included here are a few hammered shillings, as well as a run of milled coins, up to young head Victoria.

On the obverse of the half crown of George 11, you will note a very thin biro line on the holder from the note to where the mount mark was removed. On the reverse the top of the crown detail is also obliterated from where the mount was removed. There are also a couple of edge letters removed.

The mount, (which was probably a tiny suspension loop), was removed a very long time ago, because the removal area has thoroughly repatinated to the same colour as the rest of the coin.

I would grade this coin as VF, with comments, not good VF, as shown on the holder. Despite the price shown, I was the high bidder at AUD $120 in a recent postal auction.

As for the shillings, obverse side only shown. This is only part of my son's shilling collection, mentioned earlier.

I am attempting a parallel type set of half crowns, Charles 11 to Elizabeth 11. That set is complete already, from George 111, to the last copper nickel half crown of Elizabeth 11.

I have a parallel collection of silver florins of all types from the 'Godless florin' of 1848 to the last Britsh siver florin of 1946. I have an almost complete set of British Commonwealth silver florins totalling 44 different types so far. Most of the florins were taken from dealers' junk boxes, which means I have had a lot of fun searching for them.

A comment on a detail in the last part of the above message.

There are no legal 1848 florins - any that exist bearing this year must be trial pieces.

The florin was not legal tender until the Royal Proclamation of 30 July 1849 as published in the London Gazette (official newspaper):- http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/iss...5/pages/2414.

Unfortunately, catalogues tend to gloss over such details and give the impression that every collection should include an example.

(I can't help wondering if ownership of something like one dated 1848 might be like possession of a 1933 gold $20)!

No worries!

My complaint is with cataloguers who include such thing as though they are proper coins.
