sel_69l Bedrock of the Community Australia 21788 Posts	Posted 08/03/2011 01:39 am I have actually seen real rust on a gold coin! The coin had been buried inside a rusting steel tin. I would guess that that iron oxide has formed a complex double salt with the copper in the gold alloy, and this has stuck itself to the coin to the coin with great tenacity.
