OK, I need some help here. I think it may be a Philip II, but am by no way certain. Any help would be appreciated.

It looks like Victorinus - Gallic Empire 269-271.

Maybe Pax on the reverse - I'm sure a look though wildwinds will get you a 100% ID.

Just had a look on Wildwinds and found this, think its pretty close:

Yours looks like it has 'V' and 'P' in the fields though - cant say for sure from the picture but you can probably tell with it in hand.

There are a few other field combinations, mostly using symbols like the star in the above example - if yours is 'V P' then its RIC V-2 Cologne 116.

I think you may be correct. The reverse is certainly PAX. Having checked my references, including Wildwinds, I think it may be RIC 117. I had tentatively identified it as a Philip II, but now lean towards Victorinus.

Even in hand, its difficult to read the right field. I asked my wife who knows nothing about these coins to tell me what she saw in the right field and her first comment was it was a P. Then after further examination, and without any prompting, she said it may be a star. Hmmmmm.

I believe you are correct though in your first assessment. I am tentatively assessing it as a P. Thanks for your help

No probs - happy to help.

The break-away Gallic Empire is not usually as well known to collectors as the main succession of Emperors. I think this is a shame as its a very interesting period with some interesting Emperors. As time has passed modern opinions on Gallic Emperors has shifted from useless chancers to successful and well liked rulers. If it wasn't for Aurelian finishing them of who knows where they may have ended up!

This may be better than Wildwinds for the Gallics:
