I am just now starting to collect tokens and medals. I was wondering if there are books like RedBook for tokens and medals? Or a book that shows a index of token and medals?
Thanks Big Ed

Now you stepped in it, you will need a library for your book request It really depends on what kind of tokens/medals you are after- Hard Times, Civil War(patriotic and storecard), private merchant, scrip, Mint medals, so-called dollars, etc.

For those getting started in Early American, Hard Times, Merchant, Patriotic, Civil War, Trade, and 1890's tokens, Russell Rulau's Standard Catalog of United States Tokens 1700-1900 4th Edition is terrific guide.

It can be purchased for under $30 at Krause, and is downloadable in PDF format. You can read the entire book on your computer using Adobe Reader. IMO it's a terrific book; I use it daily. Alternatively you can by a hard copy version -- but I don't recommend it. It's over 1200 pages and very cumbersome.

You can get the downloadable version here: http://www.krausebooks.com/product/...nload/cd-dvd

For those getting started in Conder tokens (English, Irish, Scottish), The Ultimate Guide To Conder Tokens: The Provincial Token-Coinage of the 18th Century Digital Quick Reference is a terrific guide.

You can get it here for $75: http://www.condertokenbook.com/

As with Rulau's book, it is available also in PDF. I use this one daily as well.

Richard Greever's token database is a good site, indeed. Especially for identifying unlisted American.

You're welcome Ed.

Here are some book titles and links that may be of help. I list them in order which you may want to consider buying:

Standard Catalog of United States Tokens Download
http://www.krausebooks.com/product/...nload/cd-dvd

U.S. Civil War Store Cards
http://www.amazon.com/U-S-Civil-War...p/0880000600

Patriotic Civil War Tokens, 5th Revised Edition
http://www.amazon.com/Patriotic-Civ...p/B000GCB0YM

The Token: America's Other Money
http://www.amazon.com/Token-America...16219&sr=8-1

Also, if you have any interest in tokens that were struck for use in a particular U.S. state, or coal scrip, or transportation tokens, let me know. I'd be happy to suggest some titles for those as well.

Fine advice here for the beginning exonmist.

For an introductory and general overview of U.S. tokens and medals, I personally like:

If you collect British tokens then Seaby's has a nice book on the subject. It's called 'British Tokens and their Values'. Get an updated issue and you will be fine. Seaby's always puts out nice books.
