I find the $19.95 coin gift sets are on sale in post offoce now. There are 7 coins in the gift sets, including a colorized quarter.

year 2008 and earlier: 75% off

year 2009: 60% off

year 2010: 50% off

Is it worth to buy these sets?

...to the forum.

IMO it is not worth while for those gift sets as I do not see any increase in value...

If it is for personal ( family )...where no investment value is expected...by all means as the value here is family and not the coin set..

Thanks for the feedback.

There is a colorized quarter in the gift set and the mintage is low for the colorized quarter (usually between 40000 - 50000). Does it mean that the colorized quarter has no investment value even with low mintage? Or it is a practice that we do not treat colorized coins as collectable items.

in my opinion, a mintage of 40,000 is not low for an item that is intended to be kept and preserved. If that mintage was for circulating coins, then it's a different story. How many Canadian coin collectors are there? My guess is that it's less than 40,000. And of those collectors, how many collect every mint giftware issue? My guess is that most serious Canadian coin collectors don't. So, I agree that there is little hope of appreciation of these sets.

Thanks for Yoda's feedback. Now I have another question about circulating coins. Is the colorized quarter circulating coins or not? I thought the colorized quarter is just like the 3 red moments olympics quarters, so the colorized quarter in gift sets should be treated as circulating coins as red moments quarters, red poppy quarters and pink ribbon quarters.

Some sets have colored quarters that are not circulation strikes

If you like it buy it , if the original price is 19.95 and you can get 75% off it should tell you something about the demand.
I would not buy as an investment, but there is close to $4.00 in real money.

I have to say that 7 uncirulated coins at 3.91 face value for 5 bucks is a good deal no matter how you cut it.

...just my opinion.

By the way if you check out Colonial Acres you will see that they are selling the quarter from this set for $15.00.

Which post office? Was it a main branch or just in a regular corner store?

I bought it from the post office in a shopper's drug mart close to my home, and the clerk told me it is a blowout sale for these gift sets for all post offices.

I never thought about post offices as a source for coins. There is much to learn about this hobby still. I know where I am going tomorrow!
