Come on I'm not stupid!

Why does a big time seller with a huge sales record have to do this? This is a $50 coin, two of 10 bidders below on the same coin.

Does anyone have a valid reason for this or am I just overlooking something?

One Bidder

30-Day Summary

does that mean he has other accounts bidding up his items so the winner has to pay more?

Both are pretty obvious. The first one is laughable. There are sellers out there who do this regularly. They do not do it themselves or from the same computer. That would be too easy for ebay to track. I think they probably do it for one another or just create a new user id and use a different computer. ebay gets more money for themselves with higher fees so I don't know how much they really care. I think you should report the shill bidders and see what happens.

It goes on ALL of the time, it's just disgusting. I stay far, far away from the blatant shill sellers and there's a few on ebay that are involved.

With auctions this sort of thing is a lot more common that most realize. In auction houses, estate auctions, ebay, other on line auctions it goes on all the time. Usually in smaller quantities so less noticed. Many with relatives and friends get together and pull this commonly. Kids in schools also get together and to that. And the more it gets advertised, the more people will start doing that too.

This isn't just an ebay thing. I've been to a few live auctions and hear it from people there that a lot of shill bidding goes on. Most times it's not the auction house doing it, the customer who has the item up for auction will have a friend come in and bid it up a few times.
It's just easier to see on ebay. ebay does take this seriously, even though they profit it from it, they're not going to lose customers or their reputation to make pennies more.

Do they ever win any of his auctions? Bid retractions to me are a red flag and ebay should monitor them better.

Don't know the answer to that one. Haven't heard back from ebay either since reporting it. Don't expect to either.

I think you'ld be amazed at how much of this goes on and is the auction houses that are doing it. I once met a someone I went to school with at an auction where he was bidding on all kinds of just stuff. I asked him after what was going on and he said that was his job. He and a few others are paid to bid items up. They do this on ebay, on line auctions, local and estate auctions. If he or one of the others wins the auction, the item is put aside for a while and then put back up for auctioning.
For ebay too my Son has many of his college friends do things like that. They all get together have fun and make money too.

I simply set the price I am willing to pay and that is what I bid. If it goes past that, oh well, then I simply find another auction to bid on. If I suspect shill bidding I report it to ebay. The more people who report shill bidders, hopefully, the more serious ebay will take it.

I agree GTALLAN, one can avoid the effect of shill bidding if you predetermine a price and stick to it. This principle is held whether bidding on a house (didn't win) or a coin. Most I don't win either, but the ones I go for are not unique by any measure and another chance will come.

I'm happy to lose the auction but keep my shirt.
