Over the years I have been "accumulating" canadian coins... not so much collecting them on purpose, but they just seem to find their way into my collection. Decided today to organize them, see what I had exactly, and by chance noticed my 1968 nickel was magnetic, while none others were. Now, I did read up and now know some years were steel, but as far as Google (or the writeup on this very site) is concerned 1968 was not one of them.

Interestingly when googling, I happened upon several people saying nickel is magnetic, but neither the US nickels nor (as I say above) any of my other dozen or so canadian nickels are magnetic.

So, the real question, is this an oddity, or is it normal?

Composition of Canadian 5cents (nickels)

1922-42 100% nickel
1942-43 tombac (brass)
1944-45 plated steel
1946-51 100% nickel
1951-54 plated steel
1955-81 100% nickel
1982-01 cupro-nickel(like US nickels)
2001-11 plated steel

Cool, thanks!

Indeed all my other nickels fall into the 82-2000 years, so it makes sense. When I googled there was a lot about how canadian nickelsare "all" nickel, except the war years, and that's what threw me.

On a side note, it is quite disconcerting to run a magnet over my coins and have such a large portion of them stick. Here in the US that's a sure sign something is wrong. (with the notable exception of the wartime steel cents of course!)
