I would appreciate any information on this coin which I recently won on ebay for $2.- It was shown to be a 17th Century Iranian Civic Copper coin. Size is approx. 15mm x 20mm. Thank you!

The lion-and-sun motif is very common on Iranian "civic coppers", and can also be found on some Indian States coins. The Seal of Solomon (the six-pointed star) is featured more commonly on bronze coins of Morocco and Mamluk Egypt. I'm not aware of any coins from anywhere that have both symbols on them. And the script around the Seal doesn't look like cursive Arabic or Persian, it looks more like mediaeval Kufic script.

I'm worried that it might not be a genuine coin. On allegedly ancient coins, pale green fuzz like that is often a sign that it's a modern artefact, artificially aged.

Thank you very much for your comments, Sap. But please don't be worried - I didn't break the bank with this purchase! My modest collection is comprised, mainly, of European coins but curiosity got the better of me in this instance. It is the first 'Heinz 57' variety I have come across - to date!

This coin has now been positively identified as an AE Fals 15th Century, Aq Qoyunlu dynasty, Northern Mesopotamia. As a new member of the Coin Community I was not able to send you a personal e-mail,Sap, in which I could have told you of the precise details.
