Nice coinwatch! Wish I had that much gold! Wife just came back from a trip and brought me this as a gift. My first middle eastern coin.

This is a coin from my collection. An ancient SILVER greek coin - Messambria - that dates back to 450-350 BC. It is my favorite.

That's some beautiful 20th century Iranian gold you've got there!

Those are yours, CW? Wow. Very nice. New additions? I'm looking forward to the day that I stop collecting silver and truly break into gold. If the price continues to fall, perhaps down to $800-900, I'm going to take the plunge ;)

Thanks, traevin. Nope, not new. I amassed this little hoard over the past year during a pretty intensive search for deals. For me it represents a lot of learning, money, and effort. It was a fun journey and I feel I got something out of the experience. Of course, there's a valuable cautionary tale here, too. A good deal isn't that good of a deal if you're buying at the top of the market. For a while there I was half tempted to make a demotavational poster out of that photo.

Grabbed my first panda today. It commemorated the 25 anniversary of World Wildlife Fund. It appears that this 22g 0.900 fine piece does not command a high premium as the 1oz 0.999 fine silver pandas do. Any comment?

Quote: It appears that this 22g 0.900 fine piece does not command a high premium Depends what you consider "high" I can assure you that if you paid anything less than $150 US you did good, really good If it's double sealed, then even more. Care to share how much you paid?

Silver Panda coins command a pretty good premium. And those early silver pandas (1988 and earlier) have some VERY low mintages. Great find!

Thanks for all the interests in the 1986 panda. I don't think that piece belongs to the well-recognized silver panda series, because its obverse depicts the 5-star design as on all the Chinese circulation strikes, in stead of the Temple of Heaven on the bullion series. So I am not sure where its collectable value is at.
There are a couple of such pieces listed as BIN at $90 on the bay. That's why I said I don't think it commands a high premium as other old pandas.
Are the original packaging and mintage cataloged any where? I would be interested in knowing the book value.
@miggs I am not aware that the 1986 commemorative panda came in double sealed. Through a quick online search, you could find the most common packaging would be a greenish box with a COA in blue print. The mintage is claimed to be 25,000. Mine only came with the capsule.
Btw, it cost me 40, so a good deal to me even without any packaging.

@Amaths I stand corrected my friend I have a few 5 yuan from the 90's which are double sealed but I couldn't find images for the 1986. I assumed the 86 would be too Same thing for the price but the price I quoted was from asking/bid prices and final auction price back in 2011 where silver was higher as shown here. At $40 you can't go wrong and did good. Like you said there's some on ebay at $90
