Hello.
I am planning a trip to Indonesia soon.
Can anyone tell me if there are any coin stroes particulaly on Bali or Java?
I am mostly interested in local coins which are not in use due to denomination/time/etc. But not a really expensive or unique ones.

I've been Bali many times, and I have accumulated a type set of current and recent issues.
Every time I ask a local about "a shop that sells coins", they always direct me to a bank.
I haven't bothered trying during the last few visits.
If you have any luck, I'll be pleased to hear about it.
I was there last month: it was as busy as it was in 2002. Accommodation was tight; the food was great, as usual; the beach was excellent.

if you have any other questions about Bali, PM me.

I'm originally from Indonesia.

There's very no coin shops as you know them and even then coin collecting is only in the purview of the wealthy.

I get requests from family friends all the time to look for things for them. The market is just not there and I would be surprised if one actually exists.

The only thing I can think of is to visit gold jewelers. They will occasionally have gold and silver coins in their inventory to be made into jewelry. However, I can pretty much guarantee that that the price will be above APMEX.

You will also find a lot of Chinese fakes of bust and Trade dollars. Especially in the kampung shops.

Bring high end European or American clove cigarettes- they are always good for trading or making a new friend!

Thanks for answers..
So, I could probably collect coins which are currently in use. What a pity anyway.

ancient/old coins is dying art/business in indonesia
i am from indonesia
usually old coins like that is traded on the street, not on dedicated store
usually the man who sell old coin located at crowded places like traditional market, bus terminal, etc etc
i know one place at jakarta (city), visit the traditional market called PASAR MAYESTIK, there's a old man on the street who sell old coins and old money. this market has 2 entry point, back and front, the easist way to reach this man's location is from the front where bank BNI is located. go enter straight until you find 2 branches street, left and right, pick the left side, not far from there, the location of this man is there, do not use car since the place is too crowded, use bare foot for searching, you should find it easily.

another place is called PASAR BARU
this place is full with old building from 18th century (dutch and chinese civilation). I forgot the exact place, but you can ask the security guy there.
in this place, car is not allowed, only street walkers is allowed to enter this area.
