I was thinking of submitting some of the doubled die nickels I've found to NGC for grading and attribution. None of them are gem specimens, I don't know if most of them would even grade MS (I will post pictures in the grading forum at some point to get opinions on that), but they are a reasonably valuable variety.

I also just found out that the variety is #82 on some list of 100 great modern US coins, which means it qualifies for a special label. And since I have several to submit, I could save on shipping by sending a bunch as a group.

The main reason for submitting them would be to make it easier to get the most money when I sell off my surplus.

Am I wasting my time in submitting modern circulated coins? Is it worth it because of the variety? Am I just ruminating out loud?

PCGS and NGC actually will label only a select group of varieties ( check their webpages)and with PCGS you will probably pay well beyond expected return for your level of variety. ANAC will do almost any variety less expensively. I would send in a limited number to be sure they agree with your determination, as they will charge the attribution rate even if it isn't after all.

NGC and PCGS definitely label this variety (NGC's label is 2004-P Handshake DDO FS-101). Although I guess it costs an extra ten bucks per coin to get the attribution. Blech; that's getting up around $30 per coin total. It would be about half that at ANACS. Hrrrmmm.

And that would be so you can sell it to someone who is just buying it based on the label and who has no idea what it is. A serious collector of the variety would be able to recognize the variety when he saw it and it wouldn't matter if it was on the label or not.

Good point, but people who buy the slab instead of the coin always seem to have a surprising amount of money.
