I am starting to catalog some of the Chinese cash coins I have and came across this one that is very similar, but a different color. Can one tell if it is brass by the color? Does anyone know what the ratio of copper to zinc was for these coins? I think that it is probably not an exact ratio as some Chinese coins (especially silver) can range in silver content. I put 2 similar coins from the Hu-peh province next to each other. The one I am asking about is on the right. It does have some verdigris unfortunately.

I have a brass ten cash from another province; it is very obviously yellow in color. This is the only brass ten cash that I have, and they seem to be quite scarce from my experience.

I have most provinces represented with a ten cash coin. All of the coins in this part of my collection have come from a dealer's junk box. I had a lot of fun over about a year collecting them.

Quoting from "The Minted Ten-Cash coins of China" by Woodward, in the chapter on Hupei Province:

Quote:
The brass pieces are apparently trial pieces only; any ten-cash coins of Hupei in brass are considerable rarities.

So it's safe to conclude that your coin is not really "brass". This particular variety - number 473 in Woodward - is not listed with a brass variant. I suspect it just looks brassier because of the contrast with the reddish-coloured environmental damage.

I also have gotten many of these from foreign coin lots from dealers. Thanks Sap for the info. I need to look into getting the Woodward book if they are available.
