Am I the only one who prefers coins to say ONE DOLLAR instead of $1? And again the edge lettering just stinks.

The "$1" also have been showing up on the Native American Sackies, cheapening the design.

I like it. Nice to have some coins that look modern/different. The art on the coins is kinda uninspired though.

I prefer it spelled out too. Simply having $1 has no character to me.

"Cheap" is an excellent adjective for describing them. These are obviously failing to be used even moderately in circulation and are accumulating at banks (and then back at federal reserve storage). There is very very little demand for them, especially now that the mint no longer accepts credit cards for them (no more airline miles!). Time to admit the mistake and end the program!

although some others like them and may not. they look like tokens that kids use at arcades like chuck e cheese. they don't resemble currency to me and thus I do not care for them.

I spent a few dollar coins at the local market the other day. The manager, who was manning the register, told me that he once tried an experiment where he gave out dollar coins as change instead of dollar bills. He said the majority of people didn't want them. Some of them didn't think they were real money. And a few people became openly hostile toward him.

I use the $1 for 2 reasons. 1. Because that's the way they put it on the coin and it sets it apart (in a bad way) from any other US coin. 2. I'm the world's worst typist. If I can figure out a way to save typing in a few letters and not look too stupid, I will.
As for using the $1 on the coin, it looks like a game or subway token, not like a real coin. The mint along with most Americans gets lazier each year. If I didn't have spell check, I'd never post anything longer than 3 or 4 words. I also have a live spell check in the wonderful girl sitting on right. My wife should be a proof reader. She can see not only a misspelled word from 100 yards, she also knows what words are used incorrectly. She has to work overtime to keep my post straight.

I personally like the $1 coins. Regardless to whether they say $1 or One Dollar. I have always been interested in Presidents and when I first saw these in circulation, they got me started collecting coins again. The weird thing to me is that they can not put a Presidents face on a coin until they have been dead for 2 years or more. So they will skip the "Carter" $1 and go right to the "Regan" coin. Interesting? I think so. =)

I thought the impetus behind "$1" on the coins was for those who couldn't understand English, they could see a large "1" and know it's a dollar.

I don't really like them. Dollar coins need to be the size of cookies.

Never really thought much of the $1 on the coins but I agree not too attractive. Also since no one has touched on the edge lettering I think it's interesting, however it does make it harder to find the date and stuff. But really no one will care because no one seems to like them much anyway.

Quote: Am I the only one who prefers coins to say ONE DOLLAR instead of $1? Personally, I think modern American coins are too "wordy", so anything that reduces the word count is OK with me. Quote: And again the edge lettering just stinks. I have no problem with edge lettering as a concept, especially if it helps eliminate some of the verbiage from obverse or reverse. But I do have a problem with putting the date and mintmark on the edge. Collectors like collecting coins by date and mintmark. If these things are supposed to be primarily issued for collector interest, why did they go to extra trouble to make these coins less appealing for collectors?
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

that date's and mint marks should be more visible. It's too hard to find them, and if you wanted to display them in a dansco, there would be no way to tell the date and such. Edge lettering is kind of cool, but date and mint mark do not belong there.
