If a steel cent has cartwheel luster, does that indicate that it probably has not been replated or reprocessed?

Cartwheel is a micro-structure on the surface of the coin imparted by the pressure of the dies when the coin was struck. I dont see how that characteristic could possibly survive on a replated coin.

I would think that's the case. Also, if the details and high points aren't worn down from circulation and it has cartwheel, it's a pretty safe bet it's original.

check the edges! If it is original, there will be no zinc on the edge. they were plated in zinc, then stamped out.

The opposite, replates are mirror like and the originals have cartwheel type luster.

Quote: The opposite, replates are mirror like and the originals have cartwheel type luster. Mostly true but many are done in Tin which is not so mirrow like. I've got well over 4,000 of those things and some are Chromed, some Tinned, most Zinced and a few are Copper plated. (Is Zinced a word?) I've been trying to make a completed roll of the Chromed ones. Just not as common. Regardless, I never could see the cost advantage since even the plated ones sell for about $0.25. Must have been over that in doing the work.

Well, if you work in a plating shop, it would cost nothing to do it with a batch of items.
I used to know someone who would gold plate coins for fun- he worked at a place where they gold plate aftermarket car logos, etc.

Quote: Well, if you work in a plating shop, it would cost nothing to do it with a batch of items. Now that you mention that I could well see someone doing that. Yet just how much of a profit could there be unless they sell them at a coin show or flea market? Yes I guess if they did that, there would be somewhat of a profit but to sell 5 or 10 or those a Month at $0.25 just dosen't sound like something most of us would do. Quote: heck I think I have a couple "chrome" ones around here you are welcome to Might take you up on that one of these days, Bryan1315 Postage on a coin worth a few Cents might not be worth it though. I would like to get an entire roll of the Chromed ones someday.
