What are your opinions on cutting coins out of mint sets?
I have several mint sets that have a couple of coins each that are really nice examples but the rest of the coins are in my opinion less than desireable, Would you cut the good coins out of these sets or leave them whole and try to resell them as sets?

There are a lot of variables to consider:
What are the dates? Are the nicer coins in the set worth getting graded and selling slabbed? Are any of the nicer coins candidates for a possible "Full Step" or "Full Bell Line" designation?
I would need to know more about the sets in question before I could give an opinion.

The sets are (modern) 85 through 2000,, the coins that I would remove more than likely would not be submitted for TPGing but added to my collection,,,so that actually means the cents and the dimes for me,although there are some full step nickels that are in the sets, as well as some really good 65 or better Kennedys and quarters.But many of the coins have nicks dents and dings .

In that case, it's up to you. If you don't collect sets, but bought the sets for the higher quality coins to put in your collection, then I see no problem with cutting them out. Keep in mind that when you do that, the value is assessed by each coin, not the set any longer, if you want to try to sell the rest. Many of those will probably not carry any real premium, though some might. Why don't you check closed auctions on ebay for the individual coins and see if it would be worth selling the coins that are left over? |

I cut open mint sets and bust proof sets annually to fill my albums. I must admit, there are a few I WISH I had left alone, due to huge price increases but those increases have passed on to the singles as well. I keep what I need or desire and sell the extra singles to my local dealer. I am happy, my albums are full and the dealer gets some singles to sell to his customers!

Thanks,for the opinions, Crystalk ,,That is kind of what I was considering,You may take these Mint sets off the registry of whole sets .
Susan,, for what I paid for these sets, the research is probly not worth it,,another one of those I cant believe I got it for that!!! at a local yard sale things.I paid face value for them,,but they have been abused a little which I think accounts for some of the dings and dents.

I'm with Crystalk on this one. I buy an extra set each year for the sole purpose of keeping my modern sets up to date. It's a whole lot less expensive than trying to buy the singles and paying postage fees on each one or having to buy a roll everything.
Do what you feel you would like to do for your collection. It might be wise for you to consider what Crystalk & I do and get an extra set each year.
