I'm looking to get a flowing hair half dollar as a type coin but I'd obviously prefer to not overpay for one. Is it just me or does this look to be tooled, and, if so, is it worth $1200 being asked for it?

A coin like this, if authentic, has had lots of years to be toyed with..If this coins not in a holder at a price tag of $1200...your really taking a chance.....Original coins in holders are usually what other people try to get raw ungraded coins to sell for...but the exception is, are they truely authentic...Or are we to believe its my great grandpa's coin thats been in the family for hundreds of years...For the money I would want it in plastic from a reputable dealer...even at greysheet prices...

Way to much money to spend on a coin with that much wear and dents on the edges. However, it does appear to be the 3 leaves under the wing variety and even in AG-3 runs well over that price range. Still I don't like all those dents.

Thanks for the help, everyone! I've avoided this coin but I was too tempted by the 1795 flowing hair half dollar style... I ended up finding an O-129. I'll post pics when I get it - I'm extremely excited about it :)

Personally I wouldn't touch any pre 1800 coin that wasn't in a slab with so many of the Chinese fakes out there. Better to pay a slight premium for a slabbed coin than to get burned on a raw coin which isn't what it appears to be.
