I usually do not collect paper money but today I saw a 1957 star note mixed in with a few regular 1957 notes. I know 1957 is a common date, but I bought it anyway for $8... did I overpay?

That would depend on the condition of the note. If uncirculated, it would probably be worth at least what you paid and maybe more depending on how high of a grade it is. If average circulated, it would probably be worth only a few dollars more than what a avg. circ. no star $1 silver certificate is worth. I see those avg. circ. no star $1 silver certs. selling for about $2 each. If you post a pic would can give you a better answer.
