Hello and welcome. The design is of a silver miliaresion of the Byzantine Empire, from the reign of emperors Theophilus and Michael III, 830-838 AD. On this Wildwinds page, scroll down to the coin numbered SB 1664, and you will find the match - this coin. That coin sold at auction for $625 in 2005, which makes me worry about the authenticity of yours - this is not the sort of coin to just turn up in an odd-box of modern coins. Perhaps it's just the "polished" appearance that's throwing me off. I don't see any fakes of this type listed on FORVM, which is a good sign.

hi thanks for the info I did clean it up as it was dirty only trying to make out the wording I must admit in that box of coins I found some rare items and I think this must be the best yet. the coin itself is very thin like tin thats what made me thought it could be old but not that old. thanks again.

Seems in awful nice condition for a coin that old. Who know, you may have it a jackpot if you can keep from destroying the value by cleaning them.

From the examples that I'v seen of this type I have my doubts that coin is real. The lettering does not seem right to me.

NO, I can not say 100% that it's fake without having the coin in hand and having a known genuine example beside it. My impression from it's overall appearance and the odd shaped letters raise some doubts for me. While I do not own one, I have seem several genuine examples in the past. You best bet is to take it to an expert that can see it first hand and confirm it for you.

Your second coin is a Roman antoninianus of emperor Diocletian. It's presence in the bag of otherwise modern coins adds credence to the possibility the first one might be genuine.
It would make things easier for us if you started new threads for each different coin or type of coins, rather than putting them all in this thread; that way, when they get identified, they can be moved to the correct location.

I would agree that the first coin is a fake - the details are unusually crude compared to the genuine example. Worst of all - the lettering and font are not just off, they are completely incorrect.
I would bet with 100% confidence that this is not a genuine example, however that's not to say that this piece is not valuable. If it's a contemporary counterfeit it will still have a significant collector value. Not possible to determine age with any confidence based on just the photos. If you can add the diameter, weight, thickness of the coin and a clear picture of the edge, that will help greatly.

Fakes of early stuff can be difficult even examining them in person. At best, those with some experience can point out things that look wrong or right. Put it aside until you can show it to an expert.
