The seller was informed two days ago that the below item he's listed as a "Civil War Token" is NOT what he claims. The history of this 1960's era replica was sent to him, but the auction continues unchanged.

Replicas like this, stamped BECKER, were made by Peter Rosa, a most talented New York engraver. He called his business Becker Productions. His dies are thought to be still in existence, although Mr. Rosa is now deceased. A CCF search will reveal more info on this.

Nice of you to give everyone a heads up. I have never seen this token before. I must say it is not every day you see someone hanging by the neck on a coin or token!

The original medalets may yet someday be listed as Civil War tokens. I can personally see no reason why these are excluded while the Fulds' included many other political medalets among their patriotic listings. The originals are about the size of a quarter, brass and were silver washed. The silvering was thin and easily worn away on the few specimens that I've seen, revealing the brass. Rosa's replicas were made from a silvery colored white metal. The "Death to Traitors" slogan was a common cry in 1861. It can be found on many, contemporary, patriotic postal envelopes.

Thanks for the head's up. I have spread the word elsewhere in other numismatic forums.

The seller sent me a message and informed me that he closed the auction. I verified that indeed he did.

This seller appears to be most reputable, having closed the auction. If other sellers were like him/her, ebay would be a far safer haven to shop.

Sadly, there remain ever so many items which are listed as being something they are not ... what a seller thinks they are or were supposedly told that they were by a third party. The CCF is a great resource for sellers to get better informed.

Indeed, forum venues are a great way to keep fellow enthusiasts apprised and share information.

In my opinion, it's that much more important for exonumia and more niche collectors - as information isn't as widespread available.

Thanks again, Exo.
