Faustina is on the obverse, diva lucia s c is on the reverse, about 30 mm diameter, 18 grams. Silver, and when scratched, the unmistakable color of brass shows through. I didn't pay much for it. Was this a common recent fake, or did the Roman mint actually do this sort of thing?

We are going to need a picture in order to help authenticate it. Is it possible you could post one for us? Thanks! Off the top of my head I can not think of one that should be doing that, but I may be mistaken.

Need a picture to confirm, but you seem to be describing a denarius of the empress Faustina jr. (128-175 AD) the wife of the emperor Marcus Aurelius. You really shouldn't be scratching the coin, if it's real you have just diminished it's value. The copper you see could mean that the coin is a fouree (unauthorized contemporary copy). It still has value.
