That is exactly what was happening to me at the time I started mine, I was in a slump with 1878 Morgan VAM's and was getting a little bored and after seeing a few pictures of some I noticed I had a few coins that would fill some holes so I went searching to find one. I specifically wanted one without the Gold coins because I didn't think I would ever fill those holes well about a month into it I decided I had to have the Gold page anyhow so had to purchase that separately (so I suggest if you have a choice get the one with the gold page and if you have no intent of filling it just take it out of the album until you change your mind). Since starting the Dansco 7070 I have had the spark back into my collection and have had a ball trying to fill these holes (some experiences have been frustrating trying to find problem free coins) and would suggest to anyone that feels like their into a slump with their current series of choice that this is a fun break from what you are used to even if you chose to do a lower grade set it can take quite awhile to fill the thing, at least it has taken awhile with me because I have only been collecting coins a little over a year anyway and most of that collecting was totally Morgans. So for anyone that is reading this and just feeling like taking a break from collecting all together you may want to try one of these sets to see if maybe it can get you interested in the hobby once again

The Dansco 7070 Type album was my first purchase when I got back into coin collecting last March. The advice that the dealer gave me was not to be in a hurry to fill holes; save to buy the highest grade I could afford in each slot. That is, don't get sucked into the endless upgrade cycle.

An excellent article I found online (http://members.aol.com/enidmac/building.htm) concurs and provides the following guideline for target grade by half century:
late 20th century: BU and Proof
Early 20th Century: AU
Late 19th century: EF
Early 19th century: Fine

I, of course blew off that advice immediately. It was much more enjoyable to seek out affordable examples, even if they weren't the ultimate specimen. I'd rather have an album full of low-grade examples than an album with four holes filled. Plus, I figured there were ample opportunities to sell my earlier acquisitions here and on auction sites.

My recent status is as follows: full except for the Half Cents, Twenty Cent, bust quarter, reeded bust half, and Seated dollars (two). My cost was $570. Of course, I immediately upgraded three coins (https://goccf.com/t/9635), so now I'm up to $645 (not including replaced coins).

I realize this is a very different strategy than some of our other members pursued, but it is what appealed
to me and has been very fulfilling. I just wanted to share and tell my story about the unconventional approach.

Also, I did buy the gold page and have one example of each denomination, rather than two.

There is nothing like putting together a Type Set.

My last visitation was to attempt to do this in XF++ within 8 weeks. Just finished it and it's on to the next 7070.

Yup, Bryan. Bought one (no gold page) his morning on ebay, and I'm already anticipating filling those little round holes. I've got a little less than a thousand individual coins, and have alot of the coins on hand - can't wait to get the album - 'course, the post office will probably take a couple of weeks to deliver, but that's okay. I've got a new direction to go in for awhile.
And, yes, the staleness was beginning to set in with me, too - not much enthusiasm for the hobby. This might just be the spark I've been needing.

I wasn't ready to throw the towel in on collecting or anything but my enthusiasm had surely slowed down before I started this set. I was not actually looking for a different direction in collecting when I first got it, I just figured since everyone else seemed to be doing one I would take a stab at it also. I thought it would take me 50 years to complete because it would always take a back seat to my Morgans but it actually went the opposite, I have put the Morgans on the back burner and just about every coin I purchased has been for the album instead of morgans for my VAM set and I think it was a good stir up of my collective juices because it has made collecting allot more fun and aggravating all at the same time. It seems that everyone is trying to do one of these so there is allot of competition for each and every coin that comes to the market, especially the higher grade no problem coins so you have to be fast with the trigger. It is allot better if you have a dealer that is willing to keep an eye out for you for coins to fill the holes you are looking for but that is not an option for me since I have no dealers within 75 miles from my house except for pawn shops and stuff like that, but fengk has turned me onto her friend that is also a dealer and it looks like it may be a promising connection

Well thanks to Bruce 1947 I was thinking about starting one of these sets. Now I come here and read all of this!
I may have to sell one of my kidneys, but it would be worth it.

Hi Bryan,
I have to agree with you, when I started my set in Oct I just thought it was just going to be another new set to work on. After thirty years of collecting my enthusiasn in are hobby was slowing down. However now the enthusiasn is back I am reading more about the coins I am collecting in this set. There history and the design of some of the coinage is just beautiful. All the coins in my set are ex-fine and the draped bust coins are just amazing. Can't wait to finish so I can look for upgrades.

I started mine about 6 months ago. I'm enjoying it very much and have been introduced into the interesting world of large cents. Something I may pursue in more depth when (if) I fill this set.

The old american copper can be hard to find in problem free condition almost as hard as finding nice bust coinage that are in high grade non problem free condition

I wanted a minimum of AU for all my coins and I have to say unless you are wanting to spend a few thousand for some of them you have to really do allot of looking around. I do have my classic head Half Cent that has some corroded spots but it was already in my collection before I bought the Dansco7070 album and just put it in there to fill the hole but it will be upgraded as soon as possible, I just find it hard not to fill a empty hole instead of replacing a coin thats already filling one. I may get around to upgrading that one when the whole album is finished
