I was going through my change jar today and found a 2000-D Maryland State Quarter. What struck me as odd was it appears to be struck on a silver planchet. I know the silver proofs from San Fransisco were done on these planchets, but from Denver? Sorry about the bad pictures. Just looking for opinions, not appraisals. What do you think? Is it possible?

Does it ring like silver? It could also be missing the copper layer somehow, but it's more likely plated or somehow the copper is concealed under the cupronickel layers.

I dont have a link for it, but search on "tissue paper test" and it should give you the answer.

I have 3 plated State Quarters all D mm . You have to weight the coin , is what I did ! The silver quarter have different weights. I think I can see some spots in yours where the plating worn off ..

Thanks, this just struck me as odd. Again, sorry about the pictures, the first two are scans, the edge was done with my phone. I'm not planning my retirement around this, but in hand the coin looks alot better than the pics. The "wear" you see is probably the lighting, I see what you're looking at but that's not evident in hand. If it's plated, the tissue test really wouldn't be accurate. It weighs 5.7 grams, the same as a clad quarter. I see the proof weighs 6.25 grams, so maybe not. I'm going to take this up to a local dealer today, I'll let you know what he thinks. Just thought it was a cool find in a change jar.

Quote: It weighs 5.7 grams, the same as a clad quarter. You already have the correct answer, no need to take it anywhere. Silver quarter planchets are significantly heavier at 6.25 grams so all you have is a plated coin.
