A couple of years ago I attributed this coin as Aemilian RIC 1, but looking closer I believe this is wrong. I cannot make out the legend as a whole and the image does not seem to match that of Aemilian (although that could be the result of the condition of the coin). Some of the symbolism is correct such as the Lyre on the reverse, but the image on the reverse has the right arm raised as opposed to down to the right and there is a funny looking symbol resembling a "9" in the right field. Does anyone recognize this coin? The coin weighs 1.8g,is 19mm and appears to be bronze with a silver wash. As always, your attempts to help are greatly appreciated.

Regards,

JW

This is not an easy one, there is just not enough to go on. Aemilian is most likely what it is, but I also think it could be Valerian I. Lets see if others weigh in on this.

It is a difficult one. 3rd century Radiates are my favourites though!

It is as echizento says Valerian, albeit a fat one:

Apollo, nude, standing left, raising branch in right hand, resting left hand on lyre at feet, Q in right field.

Göbl 168b - Not sure of RIC

Minted in Rome - not sure if the Q refers to the 4th officinea.

Defeated and captured by Shapur of the Persians Valerian was (if you believe some accounts) subjected to many indignities such as being used as a footstool. Valerian was eventually killed, skinned and stuffed with straw and placed as a trophy in a Persian palace.

Might not be true but much more exiting than the other account of him living out his life under house arrest in a far flung villa.

He was at the time the only Roman emperor to be captured as a prisoner of war causing widespread shock.

Should add - legend is : IMP C P LIC VALERIANVS P F AVG

And that your '9' could be a retrograde 'P' a poor 'Q' or something altogether different. It needs a bit of Googling to understand its full meaning.

Yes, I think you have it there. I was way off with my initial attribution, but this looks right. I believe the "9" is a Q, but I will have to do more research. Thanks a million.
