A few years ago, while up late, I ran across an ebay seller listing Liberty nickels for cheap .. all nice higher grade pieces, all similar to this one. He was listing them for 6.95, and I was buying them as quickly as he listed them. I ended up selling the set that I built, but kept this one lone specimen. It's not a mint state coin, but it's sooo original. It's got all it's original funk. Almost every coin you see has been cleaned, period...and it's kind of funny (to me) to see how retentive everybody has gotten about cleaned coins.

For me, if the cleaning wasn't done so as to be displeasing to the eye, and here I'm talking simichrome polish, steel wool etc, and it's a CIRCULATED coin ... then I'm not offended. Some of the stuff that folks collectively see as junk ... just doen't offend me. I'll pay melt for all day long if you want to "off" it as junk. When you start talking about uncirculated coins, then I think cleaning should be given strong consideration when considering price. But circulated material has been subjected to so many conditions over the years that it's not even funny. I buy what I like if I like the price. The more I study the work of the TPGs, the less interested I am in their opinions.

I thought I'd post it in case you've never seen an "untouched" circulated 100 plus year old Liberty nickel, and I would wager that many here have not. It's the only one I own that I would bet my eye teeth has never been tampered with since it was minted.

I have revised the pictures....having just begun to explore the manual settings of my "new" camera. This is (in my monitor) very close to the actual appearance of the coin.

YOU mention SOMETHING quietly known...That for hundreds of years people have enhanced the color or "cleaned" there coins for the luster to remain strong, like "Grandma's silver spoon set".....when the guest's arrive they must glow!
so it has been in the past, that MILD cleaning agents have touched our brilliant coins with ought stripping the metal off the surface as newer chemicals do...your coin is original, as thousands of lower grades are..no need to enhance a worn coin it only implies is been cleaned..one must learn to decipher the upper grades....PERIOD....a grading point can mean tons of money....This is where one must concentrate there efforts to "know what it is" is "what it is"...YOU have made a Valiant Point....we should all remember
others had these before us, how much enhancement was done....is it acceptable? or in todays terms, "ALTERED".."CLEANED" "BODY BAGGED" inquiring minds want to know your stories and results...I DO...

I worry that the hobby will come to rely on TPGs to the point that newbies won't even bother learning to assess the grade of a coin. I already see young collectors who believe that "in this day and age" everything ought to already be in a slab. Fact is that the TPGs have handled but a tiny percentage of what's out there. There are, far and away, more raw coins held in collections than slabbed ones.

Like every other aspect of life today, the Hobby of Kings is getting "dumbed down". Ever see anybody say "If it's not in a slab ... I'm not interested" ? I have and I don't quite know how to process that. I own several raw coins that I am very happy with ... and which I won't be "under water" on unless I pay somebody a bunch of money to aspouse their opinion.

We have great resources today ... more than ever before. Attribution and authentication are tasks that are easier than they've ever been, though it can and does take time. I see some that want this to be a "pushbutton" hobby though, one which requires no real knowledge.....except for "the other guy's".

Yes, a single point on the Sheldon scale can mean huge money. There are folks who buy on the margin of a point or 2 and do well. I tend to buy material that's just (in my opinion) been underpriced. I think that most of the time I get it right ... but some might disagree. That's OK ... my collection needs to please me, and what the next guy thinks .. well, that pretty much doesn't "really" matter at the end of the day.

Sorry .... It's late and I'm rambling....

Chance I believe you hardly rambling and I share your sentiment. We are the current caretakers for future generations of collectors. How many times have you seen a nice coin mishandled and thought too bad? I am sure have but there will always be an attempt to improve the appearance of coins.

Your outlook on cleaned coins is refreshing, and I totally agree. I call it Antique Roadshow syndrome, and your V is beautiful.
