Actually, it could be an incomplete planchet I suppose (though I'm leaning not). If you look at the reverse, the central detail is really, really strong, but the periphery is weak particularly opposite the missing area, and the rim shows some weakness there too. I asked the seller about it, and he doesn't have any idea. Not a coin person as far as I can tell.

It lacks the tell-tale metal flow that you should see for a clip that large. The area of "weakness" on the rim looks quite suspicious, there are also several marks there which leads me to believe that was the location of the clamp/tool to hold the coin in place while it was cut.


Arrggg, I just noticed it was a 1921D

It'd make a cheap hole-filler, but it wouldn't quite fill the hole!

I don't see the flow in the edge details--they're just clipped off.
And, look at the corner burr above ES on the reverse--that shouldn't be there, should it?
That is one ruined semi-key!
