I just finished reading the article concerning the U.S. Mint policeman who pleaded guilty to removing over 2 million dollars worth of error coins from the mint.

I have always had that concern about error coins and this just about validates that feeling; if you are a person of influence and you have the right connections, error coins can be had.

Does this make them different from variety coins? You bet! Most variety coins are pulled from circulation by people who are dedicated to roll searching and not collected from an inside source. That is the big difference. Anybody can find a variety coin, but few can obtain that high end error coin.

I am not to sure how this will play out concerning the market value of error coins, but believe me when I say it will have some effect.

I'm waiting to see if CoinWorld publishes the name/names of the error coin dealers in California that purchased these errors, knowing that the seller was a U.S.Mint Police Officer...

The figure of 2 million dollars seems to be believable.

I have purchased U.S. errors (in Sydney) from dealer's junk boxes for as little as $5. Grossly off centre strikes are the most numerous.

Current prices from these dealers have increased quite a bit over 10 years, to around $50 typically.

I also have a quite a few errors from The Royal Mint. Coins that have no copper plating are the most numerous, but I also have wrong planchet errors. That is perhaps not surprising, considering the fact that The Royal Mint executes coinage contracts for many countries.

Errors that originated in Australia are much scarcer. Bitten edges and slightly off centre strikes are the fare in this case. Die crack errors are the most numerous for pre decimal issues.

i only collect errors 1909 and before. And in those early days, an employee 'the midnight minter' was known to make errors for friends. Today is not much different.

I haven't read all the articles on this but it seems that pretty much what he was stealing were the Washington dollars with no edge letters.

and those Washington dollars with no edge letters are not worth the 2 million dollars they claim.
