I just bought this on ebay, so I won't have it for a few days yet, but this is a real interesting coin. Like the overdate, the "1" is a bit backslanted, and that big die crack that runs up from the date, terminates roughly in the area of the rim Cud on the Snow-1 variety, and there's something going on with the rim in that area. Another thing that I've not seen, is on the reverse, below the ribbon there are a few denticles that are longer.

It's probably an insignificant specimen, but that's OK...because I paid insignificant money for it. In fact I paid nearly as much for postage as I did for the coin.

I was "sold" as soon as I saw that major die break. I've not encountered that one before and I have spent more time than I should admit to, looking at 1888 Indian heads. If you look closely, it goes right through the letter "T" in "United". The 3rd picture shows that aspect a bit better.

Your input appreciated. Maybe Kurt will comment. SuperDave ... I know you'd have knocked this one down.

That's interesting--is the crack/mark as straight as it looks under the UN in UNITED? I have looked at many 1888s, and haven't seen this one before.
The date position on the 1888/7 is different, but if you can zoom in on that area, I'll see if it matches any Snow varieties.

1888/7 Snow-1 date position:

I'll do a good photographic study of this one as soon as it gets here. Right now, you know as much as I do. Digital phtography is tricky. I bought a seated half that appeared on the seller's picture as though it had a pretty good gash in the shield...and when it arrived, it didn't have a mark there at all. I've taken pics that showed ghost lettering that wasn't there at all. That happens when trying to photograph through the pane of a 2 x 2 though.

I figured that for 4.80 delivered, it'd be fun to check it out in person. What can you get for 5 bucks these days?

Had it not been for the apparent die crack, I'd have just passed it by. I know it's there ... through the lettering, but one pic shows it strong and straight under the "U" and "N", while it's not as noticable in the other picture.

It'll be fun to study this one up close.

This is apt to get confusing now ... because I just bought this one from the same seller. It's higher grade, apparently has the rim Cud, and was cheaper.

One of these ends up in my Wayte Raymond board.

Yeah--that one looks like a solid VF to my eyes.
