Is this the same as improperly cleaned, or whizzed?

Not so, to this oldtimer. This Half Cent appears to be unscathed. Judging from the price realized, the buyer may have observed likewise.

That coin surely looks original to me too. I'm no expert in cleaned coins but when I see dirt embedded in the letters and numbers, Usually not cleaned at all.
Maybe some one else will spot something though.

I see a funny halo around the base and front of the bust. It could be nothing, or just an image artifact, but maybe it's what earned the scarlet letter.

While I respect PCGS I think they make some off calls when it comes to .98, I still fuming over the .98 Tooling on my 3 cent silver. I took my coin to 3 dealers I trust and no one could find the damage that would rate .98. I am glad someone purchased it that coin - hopefully they will bust it out of that holder.

But, on the plus side for PCGS, they do honor their guarantee. I purchased a MS64 Buffalo nickel and it wound up with Verdigris - it is there being conserved and if I lose the grade on it, they will refund the fair market value difference. My buff is such a nice coin, it will not bother me if the grade changes - I am just glad I have pros removing the little spots so the damage does not get worse.

I get the impression that TPGs will call something cleaned if they think there is even the tiniest chance it could have been cleaned, even if it probably wasn't. More and more I am starting to feel that the main use (to me at least) of TPGs is for coin authentication.
