I took a chance and bought this on e-bay for $25 today. The coin looks OK to me. What do you think?

From what I can see it looks fine. What is the size and weight. I would say that $25 seems on the low side for this coin. Have you attributed yet. I think I have it if you don't.

Seller states 18.4 mm & 3.53 grams which is in limits. No I haven't attributed yet, was going to do it later tonight.

Looks genuine, looks very nice also.
Attribute it then scour the fake databases, if it is a fake its very well done and I doubt many people could spot it when its on its own.

Checked the fake data base before I bid on it and didn't find anything.

There appears to be flow lines...especially on the reverse. To me that a good sign of a mint or near mint coin.
I wish I could ID like you guys do. But is this Antonius Pius?

I believe so. I see PIVS at 1 o'clock-ish on the obverse.

I saw this when the auction was active but decided not to bid because the photo made the coin look overcleaned and perhaps polished. This could be the coin and could be poor photography. I'd say $25 is a fair price for a lightly polished coin and a bargain if the coin turns out to look better in hand making the seller a poor photographer rather than a poor place to buy coins.

Doucet: Its not at all that difficult. First, after a while you can recognize the portrait on many of the coins, especially the earlier empire. Next, if you can read the legend, its only a little bit of investigation to determine attribution from there. Try looking at the research section on http://www.dirtyoldcoins.com or http://www.wildwinds.com. If you can't find it there, move on to http://www.acsearch.com. I have a ton of research sites to look at including sites that help with partial legends, legends of later empire coins, etc, but give the above three sites a look see first. I find it very satisfying to be able to attribute coins. JW

From the sellers photos it did look polished, but I figured for $25 I'd take a chance and hope it it looks better in hand.
