Does this coin look okay? Figured I would get the key to my series in or around the grade I want my collection. I'm hoping to complete the set in AU to low MS. This one I'm on the fence between AU50/52 and XF45. The pictures aren't the greatest, but I'm going to put my faith in PCGS (OH NO!)

The price drop off at XF is pretty significant, but it is slabbed and if I don't think it's actually AU I'll take it to the coin show in November and trade it to someone.

Anyway, here it is

I understand your concern. The devices certainly don't look like an AU coin and it appears to have several bad bag marks/hits . Nice luster so I expect the coin will look a LOT better in hand. I think a bad picture is most of the problem.

I agree that the picture might be why the coin looks like it is of a lower grade. Some of the luster is obscured by the picture but it does seem like it may have the correct amount of luster for an AU coin. It could be possible that what looks like wear may just be weakness in strike.

At that price for AU50, you've got room to breathe anyways.

Even though a coin may be a certain technical grade, there is no doubt that some AU50 coins look much nicer than other AU coins. When pricing out this type of coin, I would recommend you multiply the dealer invoice (gray sheet) price by .785 to reflect the fact that it is uglier than its peers.

Essentially, price it as if it were sight unseen since this is probably one of the lower end examples of an AU-50.

There is a little breathing room here. My hope is too take it to my next Whitman show and try to trade it (unless she's a keeper).

Fenton - you are correct, but here's to hoping !
