a customer at the louisville gun show last week, made the comment that the marks seen on the 8 reale coin (in the bust area, obverse, bottom of left pillar, reverse) were chinese and that it was a common practice of the chinese to so mark coins that were used as trade currency in that period.
anyone ever hear of this or have any thoughts on the subject?
Chop marks were very common in China and even though they don't appear as much to the untrained eye the marks were, in many instances, "ownership" marks. Other than the fact they were actually defacing the coin they could PROVE it was their money!
