I picked this coin up in Italy a few years ago, but I can't find any good info on it. I mainly just want to date it, but when I search Tauromenion coins, or even Greek coins, I can't find this specific coin anywhere.

If anyone can shed some light on it, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks.

Hello and welcome.

"MENISCOS" is the name of a magistrate. The city's name is abbreviated on the other side: DYR, short for Dyrrachium, now known as Durres, Albania.

While the list of magistrates as recorded on the coinage of Dyrrachium is extensive and well documented, nobody's quite sure exactly when each magistrate held office, so the date range is not as narrow as perhaps it should be. Check the Wildwinds page for Dyrrachium and scroll down to the ones listed under "Ceka 320" to find a match. The date range given is rather broad, 229-30 BC.

Just noticed your third pic, with the dealer's ticket. Sorry for not clicking that link earlier. The person you bought it off is either a liar or unknowledgeable about ancient coins; they have apparently confused this coin with one of these, a bronze litra from Tauromenion. Your coin, however, is definitely a silver drachm from Dyrrachium.

I realized the same thing about the seller once I started looking into the info he put on the card. At least it was free.
