I picked this up cheap on ebay... couldn't resist the woodgrain colour. Grade?

I didn't even notice the doubling on the first 3 letters of egalite until this pic. What is that?

THAT is beautiful! What a wonderful design!

Without being familiar with the series, it looks VF - XF to me.

Great eye, chequer! And the doubling is neat!

I see the doubling too...but I cannot tell if it's a doubled/retooled die or something else. Nice coin!

Looks like a solid XF to me. These coins can be tricky to grade, because the design is generally not very high in relief.

You're right. I had it at EF, but there is such little sign of wear in hand... it is difficult with the relief on these French coins. Thanks

Generally the high points to look at are the top tip of the hat and points of leaves right below, the leaves over the headband, the hair detail above the eyebrow and the middle portion of the vine (to the left of the cheek).
I think even a conservative grader can agree on XF.

Shelf Doubling rather than Hub doubling. Or .... maybe recut letters?
