it's called "Japanese Invasion Money" = JIM there were about nine series, one for each region of south-east Asia that the Japanese anticipated occupying. and there were various denominations in each series. there are previous threads about JIM here in CCF.

This one can be Malaya P5a: 1 dollar note without watermark; block letters MA with serial numbers, worth $12.50 as vg, $60 as vf and $160 as UNC.
However, there's no picture for this variety in SCWPM 12ed, and someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Quote: This one can be Malaya P5a: 1 dollar note without watermark; block letters MA with serial numbers... Unfortunately, no it isn't. The colouring of this note is all wrong. Genuine Malaya JIM $1 notes are dark blue, not green, and the block letters are supposed to be black, like the serial number. Banknotes.com example. My very old (5th ed. 1986!) edition of the Pick banknote catalogue states... Quote: Many new "replicas" from paste-up plates in strange colours are entering the market from Southeast Asian sources. I suspect this strangely coloured note is one of those 1980s replicas.

@Sap Yes, it's true that this note doesn't completely match the description of the Malaya M5a 1$ note from the SCWPM; on Barak's note there are bananas hanging from the palms, not coconuts; colours are different, etc. I couldn't find any picture of the original M5a note, but there are two ongoing ebay auctions (I hope that I'm not breaking any forum rules by posting links to auctions): http://www.ebay.com/itm/MALAYA-JAPA...em2565ed0d26http://www.ebay.com/itm/MALAYA-1-Do...em2a124c2b10The notes from the auctions don't answer any question that we have: different colours, different types of serial numbers... And the green note has a serial number very close to the serial number on Barak's note. It seems that the Barak's note may be some kind of replica, but we still need the expert's opinion. bye

I didn't even notice the bananas - that's completely wrong, those were taken from other JIM note designs like the Malayan $10. The description for Pick# M5 (which covers both M5a and M5b) is, "breadfruits at left, coconuts at right" - no bananas. Bananas instead of breadfruit/coconuts would be a different design, and therefore a completely different number in the catalogue. That means this note, plus the two being sold for exorbitant prices on ebay, are fantasies, not genuine notes. The Malay slang term for JIM was and is "banana money", so apparently the replica-makers believed all banana money should have bananas on it. Quote: In fact I can't recall if he has ever made mistake in his posts. Then you haven't been paying attention. I don't want to side-track this thread with lots of links to "times when Sap was wrong", but this one was a doozy. So yes, I could be wrong... but if I am in this instance, then there's something drastically wrong with the Pick numbering system.

thank you all , I do have the "breadfruits at left, coconuts at right" . this note with the banana , serial number and different colour looked so different , that I didnt even consider it to be replica or foregery , and its price was not that high that I would smell a rat , but probably it is not original

I know I'm getting into this discussion a little late, but I have some more info that backs-up Sap's information.
According to World War II Remembered (Schwan and Boling) This is a replica note that apparently was made by someone in Kuala Lumpur starting in 1978, and he wholesaled them to dealers all over SE Asia. One report said the reason for printing them was for use as lottery tickets.
According to the numbering system in this book, it would be 2174aq3
P.S. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in WWII era currency . It's a gold mine of information.
