I recently got myself one of these Civil War tokens. It's the Army Navy one. I can add a picture later for those who haven't seen one before. The question is the value of the token as it looks vf-ef to me. But, the reverse is rotated 90'. Does this rotation add to the value of this token....THANKS!

Army-Navy-Token.....question.

The reverse has Army and Navy rotated 90' with the Y's at the top and the A and N at the bottom.

Does this increase the value?

Despite the die rotation, a common occurrence with Civil War tokens, this post would be more appropriately placed in the exonumia section for both attribution and discussion. The rotation of the dies is largely insignificant where CWT's are concerned. Yet, this most common, seemingly significant anomaly is often touted by ebay sellers in an effort to make their item sound more appealing. No premium is warranted for these.

The Fuld listing for this patriotic token is 16/301, being the obv/rev die numbers. Fuld estimated this pairing as R-4 or 200-500 in existence. Most examples of this variety seen by this writer have been in the VF-XF range. IMHO, this one is a $25 token in today's market. The more common ones are selling in the $15-$20 range at present. Although this is a moderately scarce token, there are far more 1909-S VDB's available in the marketplace than there are of these puppies. Enjoy!

Note that there is a small "L" below the truncation. That's the initial of Louis Leichtweis, to whom Fuld ascribes these dies. Leichtweis was a die sinker, engraver, located at 19 Chrystie Street in NY City, during the Civil War. Fuld noted that the Leichtweis tokens, having an overall modest production in comparison to his contemporaries, likely circulated in the NY City area.
