Hi all, Couldn't resist this rather large silver even though its been mounted (thankfully not too badly) It's got a date of 1322 (1904) on it. Weight is 28g. Diameter: 38mm Sorry for the picture quality, it's actually significantly better condition than it looks here! Laurels look Ottoman but no Tugra so? Edited by Atlantia 10/02/2011 07:29 am

I'm certianly no expert but I would say this is a Yemini coin. Possibly Y7 Imadi Riyal. The 1322 is the asencion date according to Krause.

I vote this one as Imadi Riyal, from Yemen. :D I love this series. Many of them were stamped over Maria Theresa Thalers, my example was.
Silver coin of Mutawakilite kingdom of Yemen, Imadi Riyal, 1344 (accession date AH1322), Imam Yahya (1322-1367-1904-1948), silver, weight=28.07 gr

I am no expert on the coinage of Yemen - but the dentils are very suspicious here. Looks like a doubled image that is slightly out of alignment on the second impression. In addition, and even more suspicious is the angle of the dentils. Some are radial while others are at a steep angle to the rim.
I have seen a very similar looking edge ONLY on counterfeit coins made by transfer technology BUT never on an original coin from any country.
Is this a NORMAL situation for Yemen issues and if so, how did they do it?
After I posted this I noticed that there is a collar line visible on the second photo - so I am raising my concern from Possible forgery to ALMOST CERTAINLY a forgery.

I have never presumed to be an expert on forgeries, and quite often I am likely fooled. However, since I insist on liking this sort of coin, I am trying to learn. The thing that is troubled me about this coin is the actual design. Usually the silver Riyals have two swords crossed, where on this coin it has two laurel type leaves also seen on the gold riyals. This may well be a forgery, I don't know. I can post my own coin for comparison, which is from a later date and from the Ahmadi, instead of the Imadi. which Imam Ahmad 1948-1962 (AH 1367-1382). Ahmadi Riyal AH 1380 = ~1960. Yeoman 17

the laurels are not an issue. Y7 is definitely OK to have the laurels. But the rim issue mentioned does raise a question with me as well now that it look at it more closely

Have a look at the right picture: at 3 O'clock in from the edge you can see the remains of the halo around one of the eagle heads of a Maria Theresa Thaler. The other Halo is at 12 O'clock. On the other photo look at the left (as we look at it) sword blade on the blade edge near the tip you can see the remains of some of the Maria Theresa thaler script. As stated earlier Ahmadi rials were overstruck on MTT.
