Having spent a substantial amount of time talking about coldashby's Carausius coin wanted by most everyone in the Empire, I thought I post a look at my lone Carausius who looks like he has freckles or pimples. But I still like the coin. Its a RIC 482 struck in Camulodunum.

Nice coin

I had to check my map.

Camulodunum was on the southern coast of England. Where Colchester is now.

Are there any signs of roman civilization there today?

PS How do you tell it's from Camulodunum?

Nice, more often than not these coins are poorly made, obvious overstrikes etc. I have a couple (both Pax) but neither are as nice as yours - I think I'm right in saying it has the PFI AVG ending?

There are coins bearing mintmarks C for Camulodunum and ML (Moneta Londonium). Issues with no marks are attributed by the styles matching the marked ones. There is at least one other mint attributed to Rotomagus and there is some controversy over the whole arrangement. It will be interesting to see what comes out when they get around to updating the very out of date RIC volume V. Additionally there are some rather barbarous coins raising the question which are official of smaller mints and which are contemporary counterfeits. I'd not put too much faith in the current attributions until the updates are out.

This one is mintmarked C. Sorry I don't have a small enough version to post directly.

The whole Rotomagnus situation and how it was besieged and captured etc is interesting.

Adding to what Doug said there are also coins marked 'BRI' to which no satisfactory explanation has yet been given.

Of course. We're always sharing views of our coins. You certainly never have to ask here.

This is the better quality of my two - the other seems to have been coated in some kind of clear lacquer at some point in its life and is almost impossible to photograph. It does however have the unusual ending 'CARAVSIVS PAI'. Below is a PAX type from Camulodunum, SP in fields and C in exerge, cant find a satisfactory match for it in RIC due to the transverse sceptre but thats not too unusual for these coins.

You can sell it here, but you need at least 250 posts and have been a member for at least 90 days to sell anything here on CCF.

Hey Paul,

I was just thinking about you and this coin yesterday wondering what you may have decided to do. As JangoFett pointed out there are restrictions to selling here so that won't work. How about Forum coins auctions? I think you can list on their auctions. If you decide to sell on ebay, be careful. I think I would place a minimum asking price or you may not get what this particular coin is worth. Unless someone knows about the coin and it's rarity, they may see just another broken coin in a not so good condition. ebay sellers always use terms like scarce or rare so that doesn't mean what it should.

I know I passed on some offers to you. Did nothing ever materialize out of those? If you need help selling the coin, you can contact me via email/PM. I'll see what I can do.

Regards,

JW
