Declining Quality Of Uncleaned Ancients

ancientcoinguy Pillar of the Community United States 842 Posts	Posted 10/08/2011 3:21 pm I received a purchase of 15 uncleaned Roman + 1 AE1 bonus coins today from a very reputable ebay seller. I have purchased from this seller in the past and have been extremely pleased with the outcomes. However, the coins I got were disappointing. Although uncleaned, it was clearly evident that every single one would turn out to be either a slug or only partially attributable. Given the effort it takes to clean them, it is obviously not worth my time to do so. I contacted the seller requesting a return and refund of the rather lofty price of $40. My question to you is this: Have you noticed a large decline in the quality of the uncleaned coins on the marketplace recently? I have seen one. Also, why is the price for these lesser-quality coins so much higher now than in the past? I am assuming it has something to do with the amount currently available to sell.... Thanks. Because of this I haven't bought any uncleaned coins since than. I don't think it's because the amounts have decreased. Costs from the overseas sellers have gone up so deallers are paying more so therefore we are paying more. Report this Post to the Staff

Is it harder for sells from Mediterranean countries (Although I realize that Cyprus is pretty strict) to get their goods onto the global marketplace nowadays? Report this Post to the Staff

Theoretically, we'll run out of the easily findable stuff one day, but I think that day is still far off in the future.
