Hello, I have just recently obtained a coin that I found to be rather unusual. I recently bought a lot of foreign coins, and when I pulled out this 1948 1 franc coin something was off about it. I know these coins usually have the inscription Republique Francaise on the front of it in somewhat large lettering, but this one was different. It had Republique Francaise Union Francaise on the front of it in very tiny lettering. I was told by a numismatic friend that it could possibly be a production error.

UPDATE: These are not my pics but the coin looks exactly identical to it, condition and all. Also I have provided an ebay Link with one that has the "normal" front.

The ebay link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/elf-Reunion...390228185584

And these images would be of the one I found.

Correct. It's a mint error, the kind known as a "mule", and a rather scarce one at that. The obverse with the "Union Francaise" legend on it was intended for use on the coinage of several other French colonies (such as St. Pierre & Miquelon) but not on Reunion coins.

This coin has a separate listing in Krause (KM# 7). Here is the NGC data page for this coin.

I can't believe the price range I'm seeing here, I paid $7.00 for the lot it came in! I would have never guessed it was of such rarity, that's amazing!
