I've had my coins stolen before. You learn a valuable lesson to keep them locked up tight and in places where they can't be seen so as not to make a tempting target.
When I first starting reading this post, the first thing that came to my mind is insurance scam. Although, depending on the area it is possible to get hit that fast. People are getting desperate due to the less than stellar economy now days.

Gil-galad => oh man, I agree ... my house was busted into not too long ago, and sadly that one event changed the way that I act and display my "stuff" ... since then, I've bought myself a big-ass safe (a Cabela's Woodsman Gun-safe => "awesome") and we've actually started locking our car, garage, and house doors (we never had to do that, before this event) .... it is a very sobering experience when somebody violates your turf and steals your stuff ... that was a very sad day ...
=> the worst part of the story => they beat the tar outta my dog (nice, eh?)
=> lock-up your "valuables"

Quote: I've bought myself a big-ass safe (a Cabela's Woodsman Gun-safe Guns safes have a lot of room, but the down fall to most of them is the bottom is thin steel, if you lay them on their sides you can smash in the bottom w/ a small sledge hammer. This happen to a friend & his guns were stolen. On the plus side, he did get them back. I picked this one up, she weighs 1900 lbs empty;

I have all my vehicles with tinted windows especially my truck because there is limited space in a truck to hide things. I do have a extended cab which has a little more room but other trucks without any extra room are limited with places to hide anything over about 2 or 3 inches thick (at least with older trucks like I am used to anyway)

Quote: Danester How about the Death Penalty for coin thieves. Anyone second that? I seriously hope you're joking. Back to the OP. I tend to carry any coins I buy with my at all times when they are not locked away. I feel like this happens all the time. Just fill in the blanks: coin (dealer/buyer) on way (to/from) coin show. Stops and leaves coins in car. Returns coins are gone... Terrible stories to read each and every time.

You never know what is going through the mind of someone like this. Maybe the thief just got lucky this time? Although it does seem, with what limited knowledge of what actually happened, that this could be a setup. I admit I was thinking the same thing.
I once had my car broken into. They smashed the window (instead of just opening the unlocked door!). And they found... absolutely nothing. But they left the stuff from inside the glove box all over. They pulled out the portable CB form under the car seat from where I hid it... and left it.
Weird part is, I tracked the guy to the motel a block and a half away (light snow made it easier than it would have had to be). The cop who got there took specifics, but did nothing even though I showed her where the guy went. She said they just did not have enough manpower to look into the small incidents like this. At least insurance took care of the damage though.

He should have taken the items in with him or covered them up.... Hind sight is ALWAYS 20/20 In his defense though, when you are trying to get to a coin show and something like a flat tire happens, you don't think because you have one thing on your mind.... to get to the show and set up. I personally would have been watching the repair guys and making sure they too didn't steal the coins.
