I couldn't agree more with SUPERDAVE. ICG graded coins sell for far less than NCG or PCGS. Right now there is a flood of the 2006 ASE being sent to TPG and being sold on ebay and other places. If you were to wait until the frenzy subsides, the price is likely to drop.

Cuedude, was this an auction item or was it a deal worked out off of ebay? If it is off-eBay, there is no opportunity for the seller to leave you a negative feedback and you may want to consider backing out of the deal. As has been said, this is not the time to purchase these sets. I believe the prices will drop drastically.

The deal is an auction item. I'll see if I can back out though. Thanks to all for the words of wisdom. I'll let you know how it turns out.

OK, I've run it up the flagpole with the seller, let's see how it turns out.

Not true. You must be thinking of SGS.

Yep, sounds like SGS to me, but not ICG...Many include ICG in the group of upper tier TPG's.

I believe that you are making a horrible mistake to even consider buying this set. Pricing is at the frenzy point right now, utterly unrealistic considering production volume, and the sheer number of PF70's being graded by the reputable TPG's. NGC has graded almost 16,000 2006 ASE's in PR70. Is this a rarity worth $1600 for a 3-coin set? I don't think so, especially when you can get the mint-packaged, unslabbed set for under $250 all day. I cannot imagine this price holding up in the future.
I agree with SuperDave and I hope you and the seller can come to an agreement that will allow you to be released from the purchase contract. Good Luck and keep us posted.

Update: I wasn't able to get released from the deal, but I did get a bit of a price reduction. I'm satisfied so far. My thanks to all that put up with this newby situation. I'll post pics when I get them, and when I figure out how to scan them with the printer. Now, it's off to get a copy of picasa.

There is no "putting up with" this situation. This is why this forum exists - so that people can get opinions and help and share their knowledge and experiences. I'm glad that you got a price reduction. By the way, ICG is considered to be the 4th most respected TPG. While I have seen a number of modern coins that have been slightly overgraded by them, I have also seen a number that were very accurate. At this time, it is true that ICG does not hold value as well as PCGS, NGC, or ANACS, but that may change over time. With the changes that have taken place at ANACS, ICG may just move up in the ranks. It's worth watching...

ICG is very very lax on moderns and it seems they have an abundance of 70's coming from there that would never make a 68 at the big 3 so ICG is definately not advised for modern coins

Ummm Amac, James Taylor was originally at ICG before he left for ANACS. He is now back at ICG because his family still lives in that area.

I have no intent of demeaning ICG; they have their quirks, just like NHC and PCGS, but there's no question that they are doing their level best to provide quality, honest service. The important point is, in this day and age, PF/MS70 is no longer the Holy Grail that it once was. Indeed, it's a realistic goal for US Proof mintages. Technology and procedure have combined to create a product which is as technically superior as any coinage has ever been. PF69 is almost a consolation grade these days, and I know very few people who will admit even owning PF67-68 ASE'S of recent mintage. Of course, I still think NGC hands out 70's like Halloween candy, but that's another thread entirely. Edit: By the way, cuedude, are you a pool shooter or is your nick significant for another reason?

There is alot of good info in this thread about TPG's. Thanks for all the info. And yeah Dave, I've been seen around pool halls all across the country. Not that I'm actually that good, I just enjoy the game, and where I am at any given time, is a good place to play. cuedude
