I agree. Anyone can do as they like. I guess when in an upswing,I don't sell for the thought that it will keep going up and I will just have worthless paper. That is how I feel about the fiat currency. I feel safer with the PMs and the fact that they will never be worth less than face! During some of these upswings in price I searched halves for face price silver to make up for some of the greater cost! Lucky to find 19 silver halves!

Never bet the rent money. Silver's a lousy insulator when you're living under a bridge.

What is long term? To me it depends on the investment. For stocks I would say at least 10 years. For a commodity like silver I would agree with your 3-5 year timeframe.

I predict more economic turmoil going into 2012. The USA's debt (the largest ever accumulated in the history of EARTH) will continue to grow, and is only TEMPORARILY out of the spot light for the time being, as the Euro is in shambles and has the spotlight for now. Its cool, were printing more dollars we don't have to bail them out. More jobs lost from our borders, and can you blame them? Why set up shop here and pay MILLIONS more in red tape bureaucratic tax BS, when you can set up else where for far less. I suggest keep a close eye on things. Watch and protect your family. Stock up for unforeseen events, food and med supplies. I am not saying build a bomb shelter in your back yard, but but keep your head on a swivel is all I am saying. And if you can spare some extra dying dollars, tie them up in some gold or silver....

Quote: Well... how about its an election year OK, not bad. At least this provides an opportunity for some positive changes. No guarantee that we will get them, though, even if our candidates of choice get elected. Quote: the good news is: there is bad news else where that's WORSE than ours Yes, there IS that! Europe has a lot of problems right now and so does Japan. Of course, so do we in the US. Ours have been papered over to a large extent and are less obvious but they are still there... simmering. Quote: For stocks I would say at least 10 years. For a commodity like silver I would agree with your 3-5 year timeframe. Wow... 10 years seems like a really long time. I don' think that I have ever owned a stock for that length of time. I do have some mutual funds with that kind of longevity, though.

I have 15 years left until I hit 65. I am buying 10 oz a month of silver and a 1/4 oz or more of gold.
I figure by the time I hit 65, Silver should be at least $100.00 and oz and gold approaching $3,000.
Inflation that everybody seems to think is not happening in the US right now should pay attention to the small things.
$3.12 for a Bacon, Egg and Cheese Biscuit from McDonalds this morning. Used to be $2.25 just two months ago, if that is not inflation (bordering on Hyper Inflation) than I do not know what is.

On the other hand, given the volatility in the PM market, we could see some very sudden and perhaps even dramatic PM price changes well before then. I do like your plan for acquiring gold and silver positions over time. That looks real good to me. I am doing some of that too.

I would hope that to be the case but would, of course, verify anything printed by the NY Times or DC Post via multiple other sources. I am also quite suspicious of most of the numbers put out by the Fed and the government and will continue to be until they stop fudging them to make everything seem OK now when they are not.
The US has been and continues to be a manufacturing powerhouse. When manufacturing takes a hit in a recession as deep as the one in 2008, it greatly affects the whole country. If we can work our way completely out of recession, we should see some good gains in employment numbers. I very much hope that this happens and I could not care less about the political situation or how it would be affected.
