Worn, exactly! LOL In hand I cant see anything at all. I was hoping there was some other diagnostic to tell.

Well after having been talked about a few times here, and I am sure you already know, there are things to look for with the 1916 SLQ but as far as the 23-S I don't know of any. I have a SLQ that looks about the same, when I tilt it just right and the lighting is correct I think I can see the last digit is a "7". The mintmark is a "D". It has the 3 stars on the reverse so that rules out the 1917D Type 1. The way the date is so worn I am thinking it is a 1917D Type 2.

Really? The last "3" in the date is clear to me. Also the lump of metal where the end of the "2" used to be is visible. The 3 in the date always survives when the rest of the date is worn. I've owned a couple of these in similar grades. Compare it to the positioning in this F-15 1923-s

It's definitely at least a 1923 imho. Now there is always the possibility of an added mint mark, and because of this it may be worth sending to ANACS. It looks VG-F gradewise.

If the date is raised on the surface as opposed to incuse on the 1927-d, you are probably right. On many of these pre-25 slqs that have the date worn off, the last digit is the last to go, so you will see detail on that one when everything else is worn off.

I see the 3, PLAINLY. That extreme close-up shot does NOT do the coin any justice at all. In the shot that shows the whole coin, the 3 is as plain as the nose on, well, MY face, anyway...

Exactly - in the pic of the whole coin, the 3 is clearly visible under the left foot location........

However, lets just call it a dateless slick and I'll send you $7 for it. :-)

I can see the three...once I enlarged to picture to 200%. It's a dark three but, it's there!

It looks like part of a 5 to me but I need to see another 1923 to be sure.

Ok, I found a good 1923 and put it over this 1923 in Photoshop, then set the transparency close to 0. Sure enough, I see the 3 clear as day now. Funny how that works.

As far as I can tell, there is absolutely nothing there. The area circled looks like a simle lump of tarnish. Worn and I must have the same vision. I am going to have to send it in and see what happens.

Or hit it with Nic A Date

OK, no sooner than I posted that than I picked up a regular 23 and gave it a hard look. Sure enough, NOW the 3 is clear on the S coin.

Still, I would not buy it and spend that kind of money without it being rated by one of the 4 TPGs. So if I am to get her a good value on the coin, off to ANACS it goes. Along with the two 32 D&S Washington quarters in this collection.

Good luck with the TPG - unless those of us that see the 3 are absolutely delirious, you should be happy with the results.
